Eglise de Saint-Pardoux

Listed as a Historic Monument, it is nicknamed the small cathedral of the fields. It consists of a Romanesque base, a portal and a central nave dating from the XNUMXth century on which a Gothic building was erected in the XNUMXth century.
In the XNUMXth century, on the Roman foundations, a Gothic building was erected above. From this Romanesque building remains the southern entrance gate (painting from the XNUMXth century).

From this church, we will also see a large triumphal arch (resting on engaged columns surmounted by capitals with plant motifs). According to tradition, this arch marked the entrance to the original Romanesque choir before subsequent transformations.

Keystones with figures and plant motifs complete this ornamental ensemble which can be dated to the XNUMXth century.

Work undertaken in the 1720th century does not allow us to say whether the original Romanesque choir has been preserved. Two side chapels will be built in the 1740th century, the bays of the north nave date from the 1735th and 1th centuries, the altarpiece can be dated between 300 and XNUMX. In XNUMX, there were XNUMX communicants in Saint-Pardoux (the entire adult population), Ste-Anne is the patroness of the church, celebrated on the last Sunday of July.

This church is astonishing by its completely atypical plan, it is not built like a cross and it is not oriented to the East but to the North.

When the church is not open, the key is available on request in the house opposite the entrance (house with veranda).

Guided tours are offered during school holidays.
