Le plateau de l’Artense

South-west of Le Sancy, the huge plains of l’Artense ripple gently outwards, eroded by the glaciers.

This region of heathland and trees also features water, with various basins enclosing wet grassland, peat bogs and little lakes alternating with rocky mounds. The farms of Artense are hidden away behind folds in the ground, copses and rocks. Rocks are everywhere: in settlements, in the middle of fields and in all sorts of dry-stone walls alongside ancient routes. Various villages bear endearing witness to the rural heritage, with bread ovens, fountains and crosses etc.
