Previous passages of the Tour de France in Auvergne
This is not the first time that the runners and the procession of caravans have crisscrossed the Auvergne roads, to the great pleasure of young and old:
- If the first routes followed the French borders, it was from 1950 that the loop began to deform, joining Auvergne in particular. Between 1952 and 1988, the route included the rise of the Puy de Dome, stages which left their mark on the minds of athletes and spectators. Lioran, Saint-Flour, Aurillac, Brioude were also able to cheer the passage of cyclists.
- Despite the Covid-19 epidemic, the 2020 Tour de France took place but in September. The village d'Orcival was able to participate in this great celebration.
- In 2023, the big loop spent 4 days in the Puy-de-Dôme department and everyone remembers the legendary stage which saw the runners arrive at the summit of Puy de Dôme: it has been 35 years since we had not seen the Tour on the slopes of the volcano listed in the Unesco World Heritage.
- The Tour de France returns in 2024 to the far southeast of the department.
